01 About WFF

WFF is the first festival to introduce the concept of Fringe in Romania, to promote art in all its forms. The original Fringe festival started in 1947 in Edinburgh, when 8 theatre groups turned up uninvited to the first Edinburgh International Festival. This approach has revolutionised the art festival concept, allowing any type of artist to come and perform unrestricted at the festival.

Today, the Fringe concept is associated with the liberalisation of art, bringing it from the ivory tower down into the main stream. It’s a live and animated space, where artists, actors, acrobats, comedians, dancers, photographers meet and share their art with people around them. The borders between artists and spectators tend to disappear, the latter being invited to come out of passive observation and participate.

The Fringe section of the festival is modelled on a space open to everyone, from the beginners to more established acts, everybody being invited to reinvent and reshape the world around them as a celebration of a fundamental value of humanity: creativity. The guests are encouraged to take advantage of the occasion and the bohemian surroundings to recreate their personal universe.

WFF welcomes artists and specialists interested in the cultural phenomenon, facilitating the chance of direct communication.  At the same time, by creating a stimulating dynamic and vibrant environment, the inexperienced public has the opportunity of initiation into the world of art.WFF sends its message to a large category of people, from the young people hungry of an unconventional environment, to a more mature, traditional art consumer.

The event is organised in Brasov, Transylvania, a city with a deep history and cultural tradition and an impressive flow of tourists, both from home and abroad. The location has been carefully chosen, with easy access from Romania’s capital as well as many other major cities.

WFF is aiming to transform Brasov into an open space for celebrating art and the freedom of expression. We aim, within the next few years, to be ranked as one of the most popular fringe festivals in the world.
